Serenity in Stillness
Katsuhito Nishikawa

We are pleased to announce the publication of the catalog for the exhibition “Katsuhito Nishikawa Serenity in Stillness” at Kawamura Memorial DIC Museum of Art. For over 40 years, Germany-based Katsuhito Nishikawa (1949-) has always produced artworks with various techniques, paying close attention to light, darkness, and the ambiguous shadows that lay in between. Despite the use of simple materials such as wood or plaster, his white sculptures of abstract forms carry faint shadows on the surface and exist, silently, as if they are softly absorbing the surrounding light and noises. Neither do they assert their existence nor do they stress their uniqueness. This essence is embodied in all fields of his practice, like photography or paintings alongside his sculptures, and is one of the unchanging qualities of his works.
This exhibition is the first-ever retrospective in Japan by the artist touching on the aesthetics of his practice which continuously retains the yet constant serenity from the ‘80s to this day. Sculpture, photography, painting, drawing, and installation; nearly 70 pieces of architectural compositions are exhibited with the curation of the artist himself. While the silence prevails, what kinds of scenes will we encounter in this peaceful space? In the museum, a corner separated from our everyday, this exhibition provides a moment of contemplation for each and every one of us.
In this exhibition catalog, all pages are composed of photographs taken by the artist, including the images of the exhibited works. By carefully showcasing the works and installation views, the matière in each piece emerges enveloped with tranquility. In unison with the work depicting the gradients of white, the book’s cover articulates such character with the two-colored embossing on the white surface. The artist’s creative essence is condensed into a single catalog the like of an artist’s book.

Katsuhito Nishikawa.
Born in Tokyo in 1949. With the intention of studying art, at the age of 23, Nishikawa went to Germany as the home of the Bauhaus movement he was interested in. There, after studying initially at the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, he studied under Erwin Heerich at the Arts Academy of the City of Düsseldorf. Since 1994, Nishikawa has participated in activities at the Museum Insel Hombroich in the city of Neuss, working from a studio within the premises of the Museum. With a focus on projects involving a unity with nature, he also works in a variety of creative fields, ranging from sculpture and 2-dimensional art, and even furniture. Employing simple structures and common materials, Nishikawa continues to create suggestive works dealing with light and darkness and the shadows that they involve. Currently, he is also involved in teaching the younger generation as an emeritus professor at the University of Fine Arts, Hamburg. He is also a recipient of the Cultural Encouragement Award of the City of Düsseldorf.
