Welcome back, Yokohama

$21.00 (+tax)

The Yokohama Museum of Art closed for renovation in March 2021. In February 2025, they will at last welcome its full reopening. To commemorate this longed-for launch, they are holding the “Welcome Back, Yokohama” exhibition hoping to reflect upon the museum’s collection based on the keyword “Yokohama.”

“Yokohama” is the key to interpreting the works presented, followed by “Diversity” as the pillar of the concepts guiding the museum’s activities after the renewal. “Diversity” as our viewpoint, it sheds new light on the presence of subjects in Yokohama-related works that have been scarcely noticed until now—women, children, residents with various background, people who lived in what is now Yokohama, before the opening of the port. This approach will bring about new findings in familiar works and Yokohama’s history. Moreover, delving deeply into local history will also let us see world history from a different perspective.

The exhibition catalogue introduces a wide range of artworks, from relics like clay figurines to contemporary artworks, through its eight chapters and examines the yet unknown diverse aspects of Yokohama through essays, commentary on artworks, and columns. Dressed in the iconic salmon-pink color designed by Atsuki Kikuchi, the book celebrates the museum’s new departure.
